Frequently Asked Questions
What is Easy Hāngī?
Easy Hāngī is a home-cooking method that recreates the distinctive smoky, earth-cooked flavour people associate with traditional ground hāngī — without needing a hāngī pit.
Our cooking kits and flavour sticks make it possible to cook hāngī-style meals safely, consistently, and in around 60 minutes — in your kitchen, on a BBQ, or even over hot coals.
How long does it take to cook?
Most cooks take around 60 minutes from heat-on to ready to serve.
Timing may vary slightly depending on ingredients and quantity, but the method is designed for fast, reliable results.
What kind of food can I cook in it?
Easy Hāngī works well with:
• chicken
• pork
• lamb
• sausages
• potatoes
• kūmara
• vegetables
It delivers a consistent hāngī-style flavour across meats and vegetables cooked together.
Does it taste like a real ground hāngī?
Our flavour sticks are designed to create a recognisable hāngī-style taste — smoky, earthy, savoury, and deeply nostalgic.
Customers regularly tell us it reminds them of traditional ground hāngī, but in a format that’s faster, cleaner, and easier to cook at home.
What’s the difference between the 10L and 20L kits?
10L Kit
• serves approx. 6 people
• uses 2 flavour sticks per cook
20L Kit
• serves approx. 12+ people
• uses 4 flavour sticks per cook
Both produce the same flavour outcome — the only difference is capacity.
Do I need to buy the kit more than once?
No — the pot and baskets are designed for ongoing use.
You only need to top up flavour sticks as needed.
Which stovetops can I use the kit on?
The Triply pot is suitable for:
• induction
• gas
• electric hobs
Are the pot and baskets dishwasher-safe?
Yes — all components are:
• dishwasher-safe, or
• can be washed using normal dishwashing liquid
How many flavour sticks do I use?
10L cook → 2 sticks (1 pack)
20L cook → 4 sticks (2 packs)
How do I store the flavour sticks?
• store packs in the freezer
• use straight from frozen
• no thawing required
Can I use flavour sticks without an Easy Hāngī kit?
They are designed for the Easy Hāngī method, but some customers also use them to enhance:
• BBQ meals
• slow-cooked dishes
• roasted meats and vegetables
Flavour intensity may vary when used outside the Easy Hāngī environment.
Can I buy just the baskets if I already have a pot?
Yes — our basket-only sets are designed for customers who already own a suitable pot and want to use the Easy Hāngī method without purchasing the complete kit.
How do I know if my pot is suitable?
Your pot must be:
• solid and heavy-based
• able to withstand high direct heat
• the correct capacity (10L or 20L)
The cooking method involves:
• heating the pot with no water for 15 minutes
• adding 1.5 litres of hot water
• continuing to cook for a further 45 minutes
Lightweight or thin-based pots are not suitable.
If you’re unsure, we recommend the Complete Cooking Kit, which is purpose-designed for this method.
How many people does each size feed?
10L kit / baskets → approx. 6 people
20L kit / baskets → approx. 12+ people
Do flavour sticks require cold shipping?
Flavour sticks are stored frozen but do not require thawing before use. They remain suitable during shipping and can be placed back into the freezer on arrival.
Do I get instructions with my order?
Yes — all kits and baskets include:
• written instructions
• access to the cooking instructions video
We recommend watching the video before your first cook. You can view it here.
For further support, you can also purchase our Hangi Cook book here.
Which Easy Hāngī kit should I choose — 10L or 20L?
Choose the 10L Kit if you want something suited to:
• smaller households
• regular meals
• camping and holidays
(approx. 6 serves per cook)
Choose the 20L Kit if you:
• host larger gatherings
• cook for extended whānau
• cater for groups or events
(approx. 12+ serves per cook)
Both deliver the same flavour — the difference is simply batch size.
Can I start with the 10L kit and upgrade later?
Yes — many customers begin with the 10L kit and upgrade to the 20L kit once they start hosting larger groups.
Both use the same cooking method and flavour sticks.
Should I choose baskets-only or the complete kit?
Choose baskets-only if:
• you already own a suitable heavy-based pot
• you’re confident it can handle the method
• you prefer to use your existing cookware
Choose the complete kit if:
• you’re unsure whether your pot is suitable
• you want a purpose-designed setup
• you want the most reliable and consistent outcome
If in doubt, we recommend the complete kit.
Is the Easy Hāngī method safe to use at home?
Yes — when used with a suitable pot and the instructions are followed.
The Triply pots in our Complete Kits are purpose-designed for this cooking environment, and we recommend watching the cooking video before your first use.
